Spectreman (1978) Complete Archive Collection
In 1978, the Japanese tokusatsu television show Spectreman (1971-1972) was dubbed into English for American television channels, where it would air from 1978 to 1980. The English dubbing for the series was co-written by character actor Mel Welles (best known for his performance in the 1960 film Little Shop of Horrors), who also supplied voices for several characters, including Karas and Overlord. Spectreman's voice in the dub was provided by Corey Burton, who would later go on to voice many iconic characters, including Captain Hook from Disney's Peter Pan, Professor Ludwig Von Drake, and Shockwave from Transformers, among others.
The dub is faithful to the original Japanese version for the most part, although the Japanese theme song for the show was replaced with a newly made English theme song, with new opening and closing credits done in English to match it. The theme song for the dub utilized the song "The First Day of Forever" from the album Awakening by the Mystic Moods Orchestra. Some edits were done to the violence found in the show were done because some scenes were seen as too violent for a children's show airing at that time. All 63 episodes of the show were dubbed and aired on television during its initial run, but only the first 22 episodes of the show saw VHS releases in 1984 by Wonderland Video. Since then, there have been no official subsequent releases of the English dubbed version.
